Why We Allow Lurking at BGR

BGR reached a milestone last week with our 100th Bad Girls fanfic posted on the board. We appreciate the writers who have generously chosen to share their stories with our members. Besides unrestricted access to the creative contributions of our writers, one of the things that most members appreciate about Bad Girls Riot is the ability for our members to choose their own level of participation and interaction on the board, including whether or not to leave feedback in our fanfiction threads.

As we have stated on the board, it has always been our contention that people come to fanfic message boards for a variety of reasons, and we should acknowledge as many of them as possible. Members who want to observe silently do so for their own reasons. Perhaps reading fiction is an opportunity for quiet introspection, a peek into a lifestyle that has seeped into a reader’s consciousness, but not to the extent that they wish to comment on it in an open forum. Some people are shy or reserved; some are intimidated by commenting in a second language. We should respect every individual’s right to decide for themselves whether to remain silent or participate. BGR has a diverse group of members and welcomes the presence of all members, regardless of their post counts.

That being said, writers do appreciate feedback from readers. It is gratifying and rewarding for a writer to receive acknowledgement that a reader has enjoyed their efforts; however, mandatory feedback given as a ‘price for admission’ to read a fic will never take the place of sincere, thoughtful comments left by a reader who has been affected by a particular story. We are grateful to our members who take the time to leave written encouragement to our writers, but such comments will always be optional at BGR.

*** Help Haiti Fic Update *** Thank you for your continued support of the Help Haiti project. So far, $850.00 has been given to various charities for the benefit of Haitian relief efforts and has resulted in several new stories and several more in progress. You can find these fics at BGR and also at:

Your generosity is a win-win for both Haiti and the BG community. Kudos to all who have participated in this worthy project!

BG Writers Raise Money for Haiti Disaster Relief

On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 earthquake devastated Haiti, causing catastrophic damage in a nation already among the poorest in the world. In order to bring attention to Haiti's plight and encourage donations to disaster relief organizations, several Bad Girls fanfic writers have offered to write custom ficlets in exchange for donations to charity. Details can be found by clicking here or the link at the top right of the blog.

We wholeheartedly support the initiative of the writers to use their talents to entertain readers while helping others in need. BGR thanks the Bad Girls Community in advance for supporting these writers in such a worthy project.

November Announcements at BGR

The holiday season is upon us and we are pleased that our Bad Girls Fanfiction Holiday Challenge has already resulted in two story submissions with the promise of several more. Many thanks to Lyn27 and Kate for getting the ball rolling and putting the board in a holiday spirit!

On another note, if you have been searching for Janfic’s Bad Girls fanfic site, the old link will no longer work and Yahoo! Geocities Web Hosting has permanently closed. Bad Girls Riot is delighted to announce that Janfic has graciously archived her entire collection of fourteen stories with us. It’s a great honor to be able to continue to display these fics on behalf of the BG community. Many thanks to Janfic for sharing these stories with us.

BGR Announces Holiday Story Challenge!

After some suggestions from a couple of our members, Bad Girls Riot would like to announce our first fanfic challenge. Yeah, we know it’s only October, but sometimes it takes a little while to develop plot ideas, write your story and communicate back and forth with your beta, so we thought we’d give you plenty of time. Why rush, right?

Your challenge is this: write a holiday-themed Bad Girls story. It can be funny, sad or sweet…any length, any characters, any genre. Post your story in the “Chateau Larkhall” forum with the words “Holiday Challenge” under the title.

Thanks in advance for participating. We look forward to reading your efforts!

BGR Recommends Bad Girls Annex

While many Bad Girls sites are dedicated to fan fiction, screen shots, and cast appreciation, one site in particular stands out as a comprehensive source of information and analysis not readily available elsewhere on the internet. The founders of Bad Girls Annex have taken debates and discussions on “The Nikki and Helen Message Board” and compiled them into an impressive collection of essays, episode analyses, episode recaps, and a fairly decent glossary of UK terms used in the show.

The founders and contributors have done a tremendous amount of work to present series 1-3 from an academic perspective, and have created a polished site filled with treasures for those taking the time to read the insightful and well-written essays. For canon writers interested in accuracy, there is also an excellent timeline based on visual clues as well as hints from dialogue.

The episode recaps are courtesy of Filbertfox; if you haven’t read them, you’ve missed a treat.

Bad Girls Annex has been up and running for well over two years and has had visitors from all around the world. If you’re looking for an examination of Bad Girls and the relationship between Nikki Wade and Helen Stewart from more than just an entertainment standpoint, you’ll find it here:

Bad Girls Annex is truly a jewel in the Bad Girls fandom. Our thanks to the founders for creating such a lovely site for the community.

Why There Are Two BGR Messageboards

***Update September 17, 2009: What follows is our original post; however, the admin on the affected board has removed the inflammatory post that prompted this update. We applaud their forthrightness in addressing this issue.***

There have been some highly misleading posts on Bad Girls messageboards implying that our board has “stolen” both code and images in order to create our board. While it is true there are two boards that are identical in appearance, the allegations that have been made are simply not true and an objective individual will be able to see through the smoke screen.

The fact is, our messageboard design is merely a Zetaboard template that was customized by three admins for use by the original BGR. Any claims of exclusive rights to a collaborative effort in regards to color schemes or images readily available in the public domain are completely without justification.

The original BGR opened in December 2008 with the intention of being an alternative site for Bad Girls fan fiction. In April, after some tension amongst the board admins, a group of three admins chose to destroy the original board and move it to a new location without regard to the member’s contributions to the board. All threads, posts, and 83 members were deleted in anger and the member list copied for their own use. Subsequently, a hoax email claiming a board virus was sent out to the members along with their new board address in an attempt to divert members to their newly-formed board at a location that had previously been our practice board. A full accounting of the events (without naming names) is available on our site under the topic “Recent Board Outage” in the “News and Announcements” forum. Our post has been on the board since April 24th and our story has not wavered since that time. Frankly, it’s not a flattering story for either group of admins. It is what it is. If you are not a member of BGR and would like to read it, a copy will be emailed to you on request. Please send your request to badgirlsriot@live.com.

The reason we’re addressing the situation in the blog is simple: We cannot let such a misrepresentation go unchallenged; however, the members and admins of other messageboards do not deserve to have their boards become a soapbox for disgruntled admins from either BGR board. This board will not show any disrespect for the Bad Girls community by making inflammatory posts or rude comments on other messageboards.

Our community as a whole deserves better.

We encourage you to visit both boards as we certainly have different atmospheres, attitudes and content to offer you as a member. We respect your right to choose either or both boards, and we won’t attempt to mislead you by making unfounded allegations.

Thank you for taking the time to read this message.
